Absinthe flower, scientifically known as Artemisia absinthium, indeed has a long and fascinating history. Its use dates back thousands of years, with references going back to ancient Egypt around 3300 BCE. At that time, it was used to treat an ailment called “Uka,” the nature of which is still unclear today.
The Bible also refers to wormwood, although it is not immediately clear whether this is the same plant as the absinth wormwood we know today. Historically, wormwood has had a range of uses, both in consumption form and in other practices. A particular custom in pre-Christian times, for example, was at corpse burnings. Absinthe balm was put around and on the pyre, which presumably had to do with the plant’s properties. One reason for this use could be absinthe’s hallucinatory effects. At that time, it was thought that through the hallucinogenic effects of the plant, one could possibly contact the afterlife or spiritual worlds.
These historical uses of absinth balm reflect the deep cultural and spiritual significance that people assigned to plants and herbs in ancient civilizations. It is important to note that many of these historical applications and beliefs are not now considered scientifically valid.
