Kanna, or Sceletium tortuosum, is indeed known for its calming, euphoric and relaxing effects at certain doses. The use of Kanna by the Hottentots, an indigenous people group from the region of today’s Western Cape Province in South Africa, illustrates how this plant was historically valued for its psychoactive properties.
The active ingredient in Kanna, mesembrine, is an alkaloid that can have effects similar to some antidepressants. This could explain the perceived positive mood and feelings of joy among the Hottentots after using Kanna. Mesembrine likely affects brain chemistry in a manner similar to certain modern antidepressants by affecting the action of neurotransmitters such as serotonin.
