The Azurescens Outdoor Growkit is designed for experienced growers and users who want to establish a sustainable outdoor mushroom patch. This growkit works differently than a standard indoor kit: it provides the foundation for a natural growth bed in woody substrate, where the mycelium continues to develop underground. Because Psilocybe azurescens is known as one of the strongest mushroom species, this variety is primarily chosen by those intentionally seeking a potent strain and a long-term outdoor approach.
The Azurescens Outdoor Growkit is an outdoor cultivation set with active mycelium that allows you to build a natural growing spot on woody substrate. With proper setup and conditions, this patch can continue to develop and produce mushrooms again in season.
What is the Azurescens Outdoor Growkit?
This growkit contains 100% active mycelium in a compact 280 ml substrate block. Instead of producing fruiting bodies directly indoors, this kit is developed to grow further outdoors in a suitable bed of wood chips. Psilocybe azurescens is naturally at home on woody soils and among grass, making this species well-suited for a sheltered spot in the garden.
It is important to know that this mushroom species mainly fruits in the colder months. The mycelium first develops underground, using that time to establish itself firmly in the substrate. After that, the mushrooms usually appear between October and January, often with the first harvest in November.
How does an outdoor growkit work?
An outdoor growkit works differently than a classic indoor mushroom growkit. You use the existing mycelium as a starting point and mix it with pasteurized wood chips. The whole mixture is then given time to colonize further, after which you incorporate it into the ground outdoors.
The idea behind it is simple: you create a natural and nutritious environment in which the mycelium can expand. When temperature, moisture, and season align, the first mushrooms emerge. Many users choose this approach because a well-established patch can continue to develop over a long period.

When do you plant an Azurescens Outdoor Growkit?
The right planting time depends mainly on the climate in your region. Because the mycelium needs time to establish itself first, you plant this species well before the mushroom season.
- Northern Europe: from late March to June
- Southern Europe: from September to December
In practice, this means you plant the growkit during a period when the mycelium can expand quietly, so it is ready to form mushrooms later in the colder season.
How do you use the Azurescens Outdoor Growkit?
To set up an outdoor growing spot, you need a few extra materials in addition to the growkit. Think of a plastic container, beech wood chips, and a cardboard box. Optionally, you can use soil and grass seed to finish the spot more naturally.
Requirements
- 10 liters of beech wood chips (approx. 5 mm)
- Cardboard box (max. 30 x 30 x 15 cm)
- 1 liter plastic container
- Soil (optional)
- Grass seeds (optional)
Step-by-step plan
- Fill a plastic container with wood chips and pour boiling water over them.
- Let this sit for about 12 hours and then drain the excess water.
- Gently loosen the mycelium from the growkit.
- Mix the mycelium with the moist wood chips.
- Cover the mixture with wet cardboard and let it breathe by placing the lid loosely.
- Let this sit for about a month until the contents are fully colonized white.
- Then soak additional wood chips in boiling water again.
- Mix the colonized wood chips with the new wood chips.
- Place everything in a cardboard box and mix well.
- Bury the box outdoors in a shady spot.
- Optionally finish the spot with a thin layer of soil and grass seed.
What can you expect from Psilocybe azurescens?
Psilocybe azurescens is known for its very potent character. Compared to lighter species like many Psilocybe cubensis variants, this species is generally experienced as much more intense. Therefore, it is not a logical choice for beginners, but rather for experienced users already familiar with strong psychedelic effects.
Users often describe the experience as deep, visual, and mentally intense. Frequently mentioned characteristics include:
- strong visual hallucinations
- deep and philosophical thoughts
- creative insights
- a pronounced physical sensation or body high
The final experience always depends on factors such as dosage, setting, sensitivity, mood, and experience. Do not expect a fixed pattern, but rather a powerful and often layered psychedelic experience.
Average dosage of Azurescens
Because Azurescens is known to be very strong, careful dosing is extra important. The amounts below are general guidelines often followed by experienced users.
- Mild experience: 0.5 g dried | 5 g fresh
- Average experience: 1.5 g dried | 15 g fresh
- Strong experience: 2.5 g dried | 25 g fresh
When in doubt, always start low, especially if you have no experience with this specific species. The strength can be intense and requires respect, preparation, and a suitable setting.
Harvest and regrowth
The first mushrooms usually appear around November. If conditions remain good, the spot can produce again later. This makes this growkit interesting for people who prefer to invest in a permanent outdoor spot rather than a one-time indoor grow.
You know the mushrooms are ready to harvest when the veil under the cap begins to release. Then gently grasp the mushroom, twist slightly back and forth, and pull it loose slowly. This minimizes damage to the underlying mycelium.
Who is this growkit suitable for?
The Azurescens Outdoor Growkit is especially suitable for people who:
- have a sheltered outdoor spot available
- enjoy working with wood substrates and natural growing conditions
- have patience and do not expect immediate results
- have experience with strong mushroom species or want to consciously explore them
If you are looking for a simpler indoor cultivation method or a species with a more accessible character, another growkit or a lighter mushroom species is often a better first step.
Safety & points of attention
Although this growkit is relatively straightforward to set up, both the cultivation and use of Azurescens require care. It is a strong species not intended for unprepared or impulsive use.
- Not suitable for beginners.
- Only use in a safe, quiet, and familiar environment.
- Do not combine with alcohol or other substances.
- Do not use in case of psychological vulnerability or during periods of mental instability.
- Outdoor growing requires patience; results always depend on season, temperature, and humidity.
- Store the growkit according to instructions and work as cleanly as possible when setting up the bed.
